Located in Cabrero in the Biobío region and connected to the Charrúa substation, International Power Services Chile’s Yungay thermal plant began operations between 2007 and 2008. Located on 16.4-hectare site, it has a generated capacity of 199 MW and 2.6 km of its own transmission lines.
Yungay is integrated into the SEN, a system comprised of the former Central Interconnected System (SIC) and the Northern Interconnected System (SING), which extends from Arica to Chiloé. Central Yungay serves as a reliable backup plant, and its operation depends primarily on market demand, emergency situations, or instability in the electrical system.
Yungay’s thermal energy is generated from two diesel-gas units and one diesel-only unit, with the energy it generates being transported from the Yungay substation to the Charrúa transmission node via a 154 kV line.
Through outreach programs, hosted activities, and a steadfast presence, IPS Chile is dedicated to being an active member of the Biobío community.
