{"id":1011,"date":"2015-11-19T07:54:06","date_gmt":"2015-11-19T12:54:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.radianse.com\/?p=1011"},"modified":"2022-08-27T14:56:52","modified_gmt":"2022-08-27T14:56:52","slug":"smarter-sentencing-acts-impact-on-a-local-level","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.hierarchy.agency\/radianse\/smarter-sentencing-acts-impact-on-a-local-level\/","title":{"rendered":"Smarter Sentencing Act&#8217;s Impact on a Local Level"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_19654\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19654\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dev.hierarchy.agency\/radianse\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Crack-vs-Cocaine-Arrest-Disparity-Study-001b841659883.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/dev.hierarchy.agency\/radianse\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Crack-vs-Cocaine-Arrest-Disparity-Study-001b841659883-300x197.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"197\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-19654\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dev.hierarchy.agency\/radianse\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Crack-vs-Cocaine-Arrest-Disparity-Study-001b841659883-300x197.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dev.hierarchy.agency\/radianse\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Crack-vs-Cocaine-Arrest-Disparity-Study-001b841659883.jpg 320w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19654\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>vocative<\/strong> | Picture credit see below (1)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>With roughly 2 million prisoners in the United States (that&#8217;s about 1 out of every 110 U.S. citizens), and slightly more jails and prisons than colleges and universities, it is clear that there is a problem with our criminal justice system. \u00a0Almost <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bop.gov\/about\/statistics\/statistics_inmate_offenses.jsp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">50% of those in federal prisons<\/a>\u00a0are incarcerated because of drug related offenses; it becomes obvious where a large potion of this problem lies. \u00a0The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/news\/ct-non-violent-drug-offense-bill-20151001-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Smarter Sentencing Act (Senate Bill 502)<\/a> will undoubtedly help reduce this population and allow law enforcement to focus their attention on violent criminals.<\/p>\n<p>The bill is intended to reduce sentences for non-violent drug offenders in federal facilities.\u00a0 It is a compromise bill designed to save money on incarceration costs, promote sentencing consistency, and give Judges more leeway with sentencing. \u00a0There will, however, be a direct impact on the local level.\u00a0<em>\u201cIn the deal struck between some of the Senate&#8217;s most conservative and liberal members, judges would have the discretion to give sentences below the mandatory minimum for nonviolent drug offenders. Some inmates could get their sentences reduced by as much as 25 percent by taking part in rehabilitation programs, if they are deemed a low risk to offend again. The bill\u00a0would eliminate mandatory life sentences for three-time, non-violent offenders&#8230;.\u00a0<\/em><em>Inmates <strong>deemed to be a low risk for a repeat offense could get their prison sentences shortened by 10 days for every 30 days they participate in a rehabilitation program<\/strong>.
